With over 100 years of history, Modiano Market, or “Agora Modiano,” is a historic building located in the center of the city of Thessaloniki. After the devastating fire of 1917 that burned much of the city’s center, engineer Eli Modiano and architect J. Oliphant began designing a new food market on the site where the “Talmud Torah Synagogue” was located before the fire. According to the “Hebrard Plan”, named after the French architect-archaeologist Ernest Hebrard, who was in charge of the city’s redesign following President Venizelos's actions, the creation of bazaars similar to those already operating in other modern European cities at that time was planned for this location. In fact, the French title of the market in the plans was “Bazar Central Salonique.” The old version of the market lasted until the late 90’s, when the majority of stores were closed.

THE STORY

With the signing of the contract by the Hellenic State Property Fund in July 2017, Modiano Market officially became part of the Fais Group of Companies.
After almost five years of planning, construction, and a complete rebranding process, Modiano Market was ready to introduce a next-generation modern food market concept. On December 5, 2022, the renewed Agora Modiano opened its doors and welcomed its first visitors, marking the beginning of a new era for the historic market. Agora Modiano brought together a diverse range of food businesses, offering authentic flavors from Greece and around the world. Since September 2026, Thessaloniki’s historic Modiano Market has once again opened its doors, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its long-standing history. Following its complete restoration, this landmark destination blends its distinctive architectural character with a contemporary aesthetic and is now home to 30 dining, retail and entertainment concepts. Fais Group leased the Central Food Market to Ergon Foods, which undertook the commercial redevelopment of the space, as well as the overall curation and design of the new stores. With full respect for the building’s rich heritage, Modiano Market returns as a vibrant all-day destination in the heart of Thessaloniki.
